Background

In 2007 the Thai staff at Vista Pacific put together a donation project and invited the farangs to join them. The first trip was in January 2008. The reason the trip was in January was that they had to wait until dry season in order for the road to the village to be passable. This started a tradition that has grown and is continuing. Each year the focus of the donations have been for the school children in the village and the village has been chosen based on a personal relationship someone has had with that village. (The village we went to last year was chosen because one of the teachers at the school used to be one of the guards at the office.) Also each year the Thai staff take a survey trip in the fall in order to assess the village and get the lay of the land.) Last weekend the Thai staff attempted to visit 4 schools in villages in the Mae Sariang area. They were only able to visit one village due to a land slide because of the rain. As a result of the relationship that Khun Aoy has with her cousin, Khun Wasana, who is coordinator for schools in Mae Hong Song province, we will be able to do more than we have done in the past. Four villages will come together in one place so the we can make a consolidated effort toward these villages. Khun Wasana has submitted a request of items needed for each student and also for each school and village

Who:What:Where:When

Who: This is open to the Farang staff and Thai staff who work in either building 1 or building 2. It is also possible to bring a friend on a space available basis. There is no requirement for anyone to participate in this but it is incredible opportunity to see a part of Thailand that most people don’t ever get to see. Because of the roughness of the trip, minimum age of children is 7 years old.

What:
We will need to prepare a program. The program will consist of a Bible story, games, singing and crafts. We welcome lots of help. If you would like to help with games, singing, or crafts email Ann Bone. Her email address is: ABone@pobox.com We will present the donated items depending on the money that is contributed. We will leave the village to spend the night at a rustic resort.

Where:
Mae Sariang. The ride from Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang is about 2-3 hours, an additional 3 hour ride from there will be over about 18 kilometers of the road is cement, beyond this 35 kilometers is rough terrain. Only trucks will go on this trip. We will stay overnight at a rustic resort that has a few rooms and a campground. Anyone wishing to camp may bring along their own tent, sleeping bag, etc. There is a cost for the overnight part but it depends on whether you camp or stay in a room. Camping is around 100 baht. The rooms are around 1,000 baht.

When:
The Donation Project will take place on the weekend of January 15-16, 2011. We will gather at the office on Saturday, January 15 at 5:30am to load up and pray together, then head out. We hope to reach the village by noon and bring lunch for the children and eat with them.

What is needed and What can I do to help?

What is needed:
Each school has requested specific items for each child which include: Blanket, used or new clothes for children, shoes, Jacket, sports uniform, school bags, socks, long sleeve shirt and long pants school uniform, hat. Additionally, some have asked for toys, toothpaste & toothbrush, soap, shampoo, bug spray and snacks.

Each school has requested specific items for their school such as: table for teacher, teaching books to teach Thai, CDs for teaching, story books for the children on virtue in Thai , plastic chairs, a scale, a measuring poster, colored pencils, Linoleum for floors, first aid kits, teaching aids like Thai letter and ABC letter posters. Additionally, they need pots and pans as the children live at the school and the teacher cooks for them. One school needs a shovel, wheelbarrow, vegetable seeds and netting to keep the birds away—They want to teach the children how to grow their own garden. One school needs a bookshelf. One village needs embroidery floss so the women can create their hill tribe embroidery and make a living.

What Can I do to help?
Individuals may give their donation of money to Khun Aoy. She and the Thai staff know where to buy items in bulk in the market for much less than we could bargain for. If you plan to go along, please let Aoy know that you want to go and how many people will be in your vehicle. Khun Aoy’s email address is: sugarcane.1974@hotmail.com and cell phone 081-8816839, office 053-921011
